Obituary

Nancy Alice Merrill, 74, of Longfellow Place, passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014 at Seaside Nursing Home. She was born in Portland, the daughter of Henry and Nellie (Soule) Fossett.  She attended Portland schools until 1958 and earned her Diploma from Westbrook High School.   She and her husband George owned and operated Beaver Pond Variety for 15 years.  She also worked at the Gorham and S.D. Warren Credit Unions, AIG Marketing, and Unum as a Customer Service Representative, retiring in2000. Nancy was a member of the Christchurch Evangelical Covenant Church where she served on the Worship Committee, sang in the choir, and served as Sunday School Teacher.  She was a Cu8b Scout Den Mother from 1970 to 1980, a President of the Westbrook Music Boosters from 1980 to 1983, a member of the Oak Hill Grange, Longfellow Place treasurer from 2008 to present, Wayside Evening Soup Kitchen Coordinator for Christchurch for 7 years, and member of the Westbrook Senior Citizens, Red Hat Society, and Longfellow Sweethearts.  Nancy also volunteered for Abba, Living Waters Christian School, and the Mercy Hospital Knifty-Knitters. She was predeceased by her husband George and her sister Priscilla Waller.  Nancy is survived by her sons Paul Young of No. Chelmsford, MA, George Merrill Jr. of Limington, and Rickie M. Merrill of Buxton; her siblings Ernestine Webb of No. Anson, Lillian Kennedy of Buxton, Mildred Oliver of Kittitas, WA, Joanne Williams of Westbrook, and Henry Fossett of Manchester, NH. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Friday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.  A Celebration of her Life will be held at 11 AM Saturday at the Christchurch, 1900 Congress St., Portland, ME 04102.  On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the Christchurch.
