STANDISH—Nancy Kathleen Allen, 84, passed away at her home on January 25, 2018. She was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on October 26, 1933, a daughter of Dr. John Wilfred and Mona (Tredway) Gerrie. Nancy grew up in the Montreal, Canada area, graduating from West Hill High School. She went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in physical and occupational therapy from McGill University, graduating in 1955. On July 6, 1957, Nancy married Dr. Donald Elliott Allen and together they moved to Treasure Island, California and Iwakuni, Japan while Donald served in the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge, they moved their family to Maine. Nancy spent her career working at the Portland City Hospital, later known as the Barron Center, as the Chief of Physical Therapy, where she retired from after 30+ years of service. A natural caregiver, Nancy truly enjoyed her career helping others and later in life devoted her time to caring for her husband. Nancy had a green thumb and spent many happy hours tending her beautiful flower gardens. She was a talented seamstress and an animal lover, and especially loved the company of her cats and feeding and watching the birds. Nancy enjoyed her retirement years with Don, and some of their favorite memories were of their trips to the Bahamas where she combed the beach collecting shells. She also cherished annual family softball games (Nancy was always the pitcher), family outings, and holiday gatherings. She is survived by her five children, Susan Buckland and husband Bruce of Damariscotta, Jeffrey Allen and wife Carla of Cumberland, Kathleen Verrill and husband Thomas of South Hiram, Debra Sawyer and husband Brian of Florida, Gregory Allen and wife Grace of Massachusetts; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; sister Susan Buka and husband Norman of Florida, sister Patricia Ackman of Montreal, Canada, Sally Butler and husband James of Vassalboro. Predeceased by her brother Michael Gerrie and her husband of 53 years, Dr. Donald E. Allen. A private family memorial gathering will be held in the spring.
