Obituary

Milton F. Gowen, 95, of Pennell Street, Westbrook, passed away  Monday March 4, 2013 while residing at Ledgewood Manor, Windham. He was the son of John Z. and Laura Flint Gowen. Educated in Westbrook, Milton was employed at S.D Warren for forty years. During W.W II, he volunteered to serve in the 3rd armored division of the first army as a rifleman. He was among the soldiers who stormed Omaha Beach in the Normandy invasion. Milton fought in the Battle of the Bulge, across Germany, Belgium, and France. His division opened up prisoner of war camps and concentration camps. Milton returned to Westbrook after the war, he retired from S.D Warren Co. and built his house on Pennell Street, he lived there with his wife Edith until he was 95 years old. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church where he served on the board and on many committees. Milton was an avid deer hunter and fisherman. His favorite hobbies were building model ships, gun stock repairs, building miniature furniture, and gardening. He was pre-deceased by his parents, and his brothers; Clarence Gowen, Adelbert, John and Kenneth, his first wife Rita and his wife of 43 years, Edith Carver Gowen. Milton is survived by his nephews Robert E. Gowen Sr. and Mrs. Judith Gowen of Standish and Edward D. Gowen Sr. of Oldtown. Milton wanted to express his appreciation for the help he received from neighbors, family and church, for without them he would not have been able to remain in his home as long as he did. A special thanks to the staff at Ledgewood Manor, for their care. There will be no services at his request. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite organization.
