Obituary

Westbrook- Maurice Aime Deshaies, 89, passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2018, from complications from Parkinson's disease. The son of Maurice and Oliva (Bergeron) Deshaies, he was born on November 27, 1928 in Westbrook. He attended Westbrook schools, and graduated from Westbrook High School. During WW II He worked as a welder in the shipyard in S. Portland, building Liberty ships for the war effort. After the war he worked as a body mechanic, and then served in the Air Force in Labrador preserving equipment coming back from Europe from the war. Later he worked as a body mechanic then as an auto insurance adjuster. He next worked as an adjuster for several Fire and Casualty insurance companies. Later he became the V.P. of York Mutual Insurance Company in West Buxton. He eventually was promoted to President of the company. While President, He modernized The Companies business processes and moved the company headquarters to Westbrook. He retired after 25 years in this role. He served in the House of Representatives of the 106th Legislature State of Maine. Mr. Deshaies was an avid outdoorsman. He was an expert fly fisherman and loved to ice fish with his longtime companions, son and granddaughters. He thoroughly enjoyed hunting of all types from birds to deer and moose. His great love of the outdoors was imparted to his children on to his granddaughters. He was a teller of tall tales and loved to tell elaborate stories to his granddaughters, one on each knee. "Pep" loved to make an adventure out of anything with them. He also loved to work with his hands doing many carpentry projects at his camp turned home in Rockwood Me. He also loved to build elaborate furniture in his wood working shop. Mr. Deshaies is Survived by his loving wife Joan, of 66 years, his daughter Michelle Deshaies and husband Timothy Wolf of Gypsum Co., his Son Mark and wife Stephanie of Standish, and beloved Granddaughters Jamie and Katherine of Portland. His family would like to thank the Staff of Stroudwater Lodge, the nursing and support staff of Avita of Westbrook, and Compassus Hospice for their compassionate care for our dad. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 from 5-7 PM at the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee, 35 Church St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony's of Padua Parish, 268 Brown St. Westbrook. Interment will follow in St. Hyacinth Cemetery, Stroudwater St. Westbrook. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his Maurice's memory to the Michael J.
