Obituary

Mary Lou Richardson, born October 11, 1935, to Clarence A. Hughes and Doris Eleanor Hughes in Westbrook, Maine, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, December 21, surrounded by the love she so freely gave throughout her life.

Mary Lou graduated from Westbrook High School in 1953 and earned her college degree from the University of Maine at Orono in 1957. She devoted 30 years to the Westbrook School System as an elementary school teacher and was remembered for her kindness, patience, and dedication to her students. She was a proud member of the Cumberland County Retired Teachers Association and a lifelong member of the Westbrook–Warren Congregational Church.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Carl Richardson, and her son-in-law, David H. Davis Jr.

Mary Lou is survived by her daughters, Lisa Varney (Bill) of Bingham, Maine, and Lori Davis of Standish, Maine; and her son, Carl H. Richardson (Lorna) of Raymond, Maine. She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Jared Peters (Abby) of Gorham, Maine; Joshua Peters (Bridgette) of Bucksport, Maine; Ben Davis of Hollis, Maine; Erika Morrell (Ryan) of Casco, Maine; Aimee Wintle (Adam) of Sinclair, Maine; and Jenna Richardson of Casco, Maine. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Grant and Chelsea Peters of Gorham, Maine, and Paxton Peters of Bucksport, Maine.

An avid reader and devoted book club member, Mary Lou cherished learning and meaningful conversation. During retirement, she and her husband moved to Sebago Lake, where they delighted in boating, lakeside living, and creating treasured summer and winter memories with family—especially their grandchildren.

In her final years, Mary Lou resided at The Inn at Village Square in Gorham, Maine, a place she thoughtfully chose. There, she found comfort, companionship, and a second family.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Inn at Village Square and to Hospice Affinity Care for their compassionate care and devotion to Mary Lou.

A private graveside service will be held, followed by a celebration of Mary Lou’s life in the spring of 2026. Arrangements are entrusted to Dolby, Blais & Segee Funeral Home.
