Westbrook - Mary Irene Peters, 97, passed away in Portland on Thursday, December 20, 2018. The daughter of Adam and Christine (Pederson) Peffer, she was born in Chicago Illinois on June 17, 1921. As a child her father taught her how to ice skate on Lake Michigan, which was a fond memory she carried for the rest of her life. Her father died when she was 16 years old and her mother moved the family to Westbrook where she had relatives. She graduated from Westbrook High School in 1939 and after graduation started working at Peters' Tea Room. While working there she met Louis Peters and a courtship commenced. The two were married on March 7, 1941 and they settled in Westbrook to raise their family. Mary loved Westbrook and was a member of the Westbrook Women's Club, The Westbrook Hospital Women's Auxiliary, and was a co-founder of the Westbrook Together Days. She was known for her cooking and baking. She would not only cook for her family but often brought baked treats, especially cookies , to friends , neighbors, and even her doctors . She always made the birthday cake for every child, grandchild, and great grandchild. When she wasn't baking, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, watching the Red Sox, and traveling with her husband to Florida in the winters. Mary's family would like to thank the Inn at Village Square in Gorham for taking such excellent care of their mother. She was predeceased by her husband Louis Peters, her daughter Nancy Marrone, her brother Richard Peffer, and her sister Rita Drouin. She is survived by her children, Linda Naylon, and her husband Terry of Florida, John Peters, and his wife Linda of Windham, Janice Esmond, and her husband John of Windham, David Peters, and his wife Lisa of Saco, and Laurie Nordfors, and her husband Mike of Gorham. She is also survived by her 14 grandchildren, Lisa, Michael, Joseph, Kristine, Eric, Wendy, Christopher, Scott, Jamie, Miranda, Alexandra, Nicholas, Katie, and Ashley, and 14 great grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Thursday, December 27, 2018 from 10-11:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 612 Main St. Westbrook. A service will follow at the church at 11:30 AM; with a reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook in the Spring. Arrangements are under the care of the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mary's memory to Trinity Lutheran Church.
