Obituary

Mary Dianne Akeley Gordon, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025. She was born on January 26, 1935 in Lewiston, Maine and was the daughter of the late Leon F. and Irene F. Akeley and sister of the late Leon "Sonny" Akeley. Dianne graduated from Lewiston High School in 1953 and continued her education at Gorham State Teachers College (now University of Southern Maine) in 1959 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She blessed the students as their wonderful teacher in Augusta, Maine, Portland, Maine and Middletown Connecticut. She married her college sweetheart, the late Norman Gordon in 1958 and moved to Windham in 1965 where she raised her family of 2 daughters and one son. Her life was devoted to her family and caregiving of her parents. She was always involved in her children's education and activities and at her church , Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Religion, kindness and giving back was an anchor in her life. She was a social justice advocate and volunteered weekly at the Portland Soup Kitchen, was on the social committee and the Lady's Women's guild and was a very special friend at Windham Pines. She was always the friend who would call to check in and would always send beautiful cards and notes for everyone's special occasions. Dianne is survived by her children and their families: Laura Barbaro and her husband John of Naples, FL , James Gordon and his wife Angela of Randolph, ME and Elizabeth Heinzman and her husband Jack, of Gorham, ME. She cherished her grandchildren: Jennifer Gordon, John Barbaro and his wife Lauren, and Samantha Heinzman as well as her great grandchildren: Tanner Fancy, Caleb Millard and Gabriella Barbaro. She also had a special love for her grand pup's, Eddy Heinzman and Hudson Barbaro. She will be fondly missed by her loving friends and family. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Sedgewood Commons and Affinity Care Hospice of Maine for their exceptional care and compassion during Dianne's final months.
