Martin W. Grant, Sr. "Marty", 84 Scarborough - Martin W. Grant, Sr., 84, formerly of Westbrook, passed away on January 15, 2018, at the Maine Veterans' Home from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was born on September 6, 1933, a son of Clyde H. and Theresa A. (Cavanaugh) Grant. He grew up in Old Town, Maine, graduating from Old Town High School in the class of 1952 where he was a three sport athlete, playing baseball, football and basketball. He was a starter on the 1952 Old Town High School basketball team that won the Maine State Championship and then played in the New England Tournament at the Boston Garden. This team was the first team in the history of Old Town High School to accomplish such a feat. After high school, Marty enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was assigned to the Motor Pool and had the honor of driving Syngman Rhee, then President of South Korea. During his time in the military, he began corresponding with a young lady named Germaine Roberge, from Westbrook, Maine. He made a special effort to come to Westbrook for Germaine's Senior Prom and Graduation. Thus began a 63 year love affair. They were married on November 20, 1954 and made their first home in San Antonio, TX, where Marty was stationed. After Marty was discharged, they moved to Westbrook, Maine where they made their home for 62 years. Marty found employment at the Westbrook paper mill, then known as S.D. Warren. He was employed there for over 37 years, retiring in 1993. During his time at the mill, Marty graduated from the Pulp and Paper Institute at UMO and rose to the position of Tour Supervisor in the Material Handling Department. During his free time, Marty enjoyed following the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots. He was an avid sports fan and was able to recite all of the statistics for players whether they were from the New England teams or not. He was a member of St. Anthony's in Westbrook where he served as a communicant, and also on the Parish Council. Marty moved into the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough in April 2017. There he received loving care from all of the staff. There he was able to participate in many activities that brought great joy to him in his final months. The family will be forever grateful for the respect and dignity that he was afforded by the staff. He was predeceased by his parents Clyde H. and Theresa A. Grant, siblings Lawrence Grant, James Cavanaugh and sister-in-law Theresa Cavanaugh, Hilda Seymour and brother-in-law Alfred Seymour, Jean Branch and brother-in-law Kenneth Branch, brother-in-law Maurice Roberge and sister-in-law Kathleen Roberge, sister-in-law Jeannette Hassey-Putnam and brother-in-law Kenneth Crippen, mother-in-law Flora Roberge and father-in-law Joseph Roberge. He was also predeceased by daughter-in-law Judith Grant and granddaughter Brienne Grindle. Marty is survived by his wife, Germaine and their four children, Cynthia Grindle and husband Terrance and their 3 children and spouses, Martin Grant, Jr. and partner Norman Boulay and his 4 children and spouses, Scott Grant and wife Susan and their 6 children, and Beth Schinella and husband Jerry and their 3 children. He dearly loved his 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Clyde D. Grant and wife Catherine, Patrick Grant and wife Frederica, Dennis Grant and wife Barbara, and sister-in-law Juliette Grant and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Sunday, January 21, from 4-6 PM at the Dolby Blais & Segee Funeral Chapel, 35 Church Street, Westbrook, ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 22 at 11 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 268 Brown Street, Westbrook, ME. Interment with military honors will be held at Maine Veterans' Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, ME on Friday, January 26 at 1PM.
