Obituary

Steep Falls- Marjorie "Midge" Parker, 75, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. The daughter of Everett and Esther Smith, Midge was born on June 18, 1942 in Waterboro Maine. She had an idyllic childhood growing up in the family farmhouse on West Rd. She often reminisced about how her grandfather, a railroad engineer, would blow a special whistle pattern as he passed by the house to say "hello" to Midge and her sister Nancy. When Midge was five the "47 wildfires" came through the area of her family home. Fortunately, her family did not lose their home, but they did have to evacuate when they saw the flames coming toward them. Their story was featured in Wildfire Loose the Week Maine Burned by Joyce Butler. After graduation from High School, Midge attended the Gorham State Teacher's College. While at college a mutual friend introduced her to a young man named Don Parker that was attending the University of Maine in Portland. Don was "smitten from the beginning". When Don had to transfer to Orono to complete his education the two carried on a long-distance relationship which included many letters. After Midge graduated from college she and Don were married on June 13, 1964. They settled in Old Town, where Midge started teaching second grade while Don finished his degree. As newlyweds, they did not have much money but they both fondly remember that year with happy memories. After Don graduated from college they moved to Portland, bought a house "on a whim" and both found teaching jobs. Midge was a natural teacher, and had a gift for teaching young boys that others had given up on. It was always a source of frustration for her at the end of the school year if other teachers tried to warn her about "problem students" that she would have the following school year. She always felt each student deserved a chance. In 1979, Midge and Don moved to Steep Falls to build a house on family land. Midge took a teaching job at George E. Jack school in Standish, where she taught for twenty-one years. When her daughter Marianne worked on the ambulance for a while, Midge decided that she wanted to try it too. She ended up working as an EMT for Standish for 8 years. During this time, she development a close relationship with her crew chief, Hal Ware, who did his last shift with Midge this week, staying by her bedside Saturday night to administer her hourly medication so her family could get a full night's rest. Midge enjoyed spending time with her husband Don at Cobb's Camps at Pierce Pond. She also enjoyed spending time with her sister Nancy, with whom she was very close. When her sister Nancy died of breast cancer, Midge felt her loss deeply. Midge is survived by her husband Don of 53 years. She is also survived by her son Michael Parker and his wife Toni of Jay, her daughter Marianne Bois and her husband Scott of Steep Falls, her grandchildren, Micah, Noah, and Eli Parker, Cody Oceguera, and Paige Bois. Midge's family wishes to express their deep gratitude to VNA Hospice, for their care and support for her and her family, especially Liz Paterson. Also, a very special thank you to Dale and Roland Bois for all the care, night shifts, meals, and support, throughout the years. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Thursday, September 28, 2017 from 4-6 PM at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd. Windham. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the West Gorham Union Church, 190 Ossipee Trail, Gorham. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Midge's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter 383 US Route One, Suite 2C Scarborough, ME 04074 or at alz.org.
