Obituary

Marilyn Joan Davis Daniels, 84, passed away on August 17, 2020 after a period of declining health and a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease, at Ledgeview Assisted Living in Cumberland with her husband and best friend by her side. She was born December 30, 1935 to Walter and Ruth (Harvey) Davis in Houlton. She was the oldest of four children and a doting big sister to Lorraine (Davis) Quint, Walter Jr. (Pal), and Gary. Growing up, Marilyn shared a special bond with her maternal grandmother, Phoebe Harvey, and formed many life-long friendships growing up in Aroostook County. Marilyn graduated from Houlton High School in 1953 and went on to attend Mount Ida College in Newton, MA earning her degree in secretarial sciences. On summer break from college, she attended a camp party at Nickerson Lake and met a handsome University of Maine basketball player, Albert (Bert) Daniels, Jr., also from Houlton, who would become her partner, soulmate and the love of her life. Bert was immediately smitten and worked hard to keep Marilyn's attention. The courtship blossomed thanks to regular weekend train trips, and rides hitched on her Dad's trailer trucks, between Boston and Bangor. Shortly after Marilyn graduated from Mount Ida, and Bert from UMO, the young couple married on August 14, 1955 and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. After a brief honeymoon at Grand Lake, their marital journey began at the Marine Corp Base of Quantico, Virginia. Within the first year of marriage, Marilyn became a Marine Corps officer's wife as well as a mother to their first child Shari. Eleven months later, David, was born at Camp Lejeune, N.C., in 1957. Their final tour of duty was Pensacola Naval Air Station, where Karen was born in 1958. They moved back to Houlton in 1959, taking the first of many family road trips, traveling from Florida to Maine in a 1952 Plymouth, with 3 kids in a porta-crib, wedged into the back seat. Houlton was home for the next 60 years and the family continued to grow as Jill was born in 1967 and was finally complete in 1975 with their 5th child, Andrew. As a young mother, she focused all her energy and attention on her family. Marilyn made sure every lunch was packed, homework assignments completed, laundry ironed, and meals prepared to perfection while also keeping a house that was never less than impeccably clean and well-organized. Marilyn acquired these traits from her mother Ruth, and was further influenced by her father Walter, with whom she and the entire generation of children were extremely close. Marilyn's activities outside the home included an active social life, volunteer work, Great Books Club and playing/competing in bridge tournaments traveling throughout Maine and New England with lifelong friends Harriette Dunn and Betty Stone. Marilyn's Catholic faith was important to her and was a devoted parishioner and volunteer at St. Mary's Parish in Houlton and later at St. Cecilia's in Ft. Myers, Florida for many years. As her children grew older, she began to work outside the home and enjoyed a career as an interior design consultant for Dunn Furniture and also served as a substitute teacher at Houlton High School. Marilyn was a natural hostess - leading to countless gatherings and celebrations at her home over the years. There were many in the community that would consider her "mom", as she treated them like her own by offering the same love, encouragement, and delicious home-cooked meals. Marilyn's home was always the go-to spot for birthday parties, graduations, showers, and of course the annual 4th of July Pool party and Christmas Eve celebration. She was a great cook making everything from scratch. Marilyn cherished her children but her duties as Mammie went beyond a typical grandmother. Every time a new grandchild was born, she could not wait to hold them. The first of fourteen grandchildren was born in 1979 and the last was born in 2010. Marilyn went on to become a great-Mammie with 8 great-grandchildren, including the latest baby girl born in June. In addition to the wide circle of friends from Houlton, Marilyn and Bert quickly formed many special friendships once they began wintering in Fort Myers, Florida in 1995. Marilyn loved to plan events and eventually became a travel agent, coordinating many trips. Her favorite trip to organize was probably her 50th wedding anniversary cruise to Bermuda in 2005 where the entire family and many close friends celebrated Marilyn and Bert's milestone together. Marilyn was a beautiful seamstress, an avid yet frugal shopper and a world-wide traveler. She enjoyed daily crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, and was always up for a Hallmark movie. She was predeceased by her parents Ruth and Walter Davis, as well as her brother Walter, Jr. She is survived by her loving husband Albert Jr., sister Lorraine Quint of Houlton, brother Gary Davis of Ocala, FL, daughter Shari (Kent) Good of Houlton, son David (Renee) of Falmouth, daughter Karen (Russ) Fitzpatrick of Houlton, daughter Jill (Caleb) Bell of Scarborough, and son Andrew of Charlotte, NC. Her grandchildren, Courtney, Barrett, David A., Elizabeth, Garrett, Tanner, Holden, Katie, Sean, Kyle, Margaret, Sarah, Melissa and Cooper, will miss her dearly and always treasure the memories they made with Mammie and Papa. Mammie was fortunate enough to fill her heart with more love for her great-grandchildren, Bode, Jackson, Elyse, Kellan, Louie, Rosie, Willa, and Clara. The family is most appreciative of the care from the loving staff at Ledgeview. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Marilyn's honor to the Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter at https://www.alz.org/maine. A private Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Martyr's church in Falmouth, on Saturday, August 22 at 10:00 AM. A live stream of the Mass will be accessible at https://pothe.org/streamspot.
