Obituary

Marie Therese Carrier, 87, passed away peacefully  on February 28 at St. Joseph's Residence and Rehabilitation. Therese resided at St. Josephs' for the past 3 years. The daughter of  the late Aime and Emilienne Arsenault of Central Street, Westbrook, Therese was born in Mexico, Maine on January 17, 1927. The only member of the Arsenault  family who was not born in Prince Edward Island, Canada, she was the youngest of seven children. She was predeceased by three brothers, Clovis, Joseph and Albert Arsenault, and three sisters, Ida Robichaud, Mathilda Childs and Delina Mercier. The Arsenault family moved to Westbrook when Therese was a child, and she graduated from St. Hyacinth School, Westbrook, and Westbrook High School. She then joined the Cadet Nurse Corps, graduating from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She worked at Mercy Hospital in Portland for over 35 years, primarily in the obstetrics department, and later at the Westbrook Community Hospital. As a student nurse, she met J. Robert Carrier of Lewiston, and they married at St. Hyacinth Church in Westbrook, on June 17, 1949. They celebrated their 64th anniversary in 2013. They had four children, the late Robert J. Carrier of Windham, Richard A. Carrier of Windham, Michele Carrier Kierstead of North Andover, Massachusetts, and Ronald H. Carrier who with his wife Lori also lives in Windham. There are seven grandchildren, Daniel Carrier, David Carrier, Dennis Carrier, Joseph Carrier, Thomas Kierstead, Sarah Emilienne Kierstead and Juliette Marie Carrier, and seven great-grandchildren. A cheerful, fun person, Therese continued to sing and play piano by ear while at St. Joseph's. For years she entertained her children, nieces and nephews and grandchildren with stories of her childhood. A favorite was how as a young girl, she tap-danced for a radio broadcast, using a wooden suitcase made by her uncle as a stage. She loved going to the family camp at Little Sebago and especially enjoyed seeing and hearing the loons. She also loved Peaks Island, bean suppers, teaching the children songs and dances like the hokey pokey and the step-shuffle hop. For over 45 years, she played bridge with her bridge club, a group of very close friends who got together to play bridge as well as for plays and parties. She also had lifelong friends from her nursing career. A communicant of St. Hyacinth Church, Therese was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the St. Anne Society. She will be sadly missed by her beloved husband and family, her many friends, and from more recent times, the kind staff at St. Josephs. Visiting hours will be held at Blais & Hay Funeral Home in Westbrook from 6 to 9 pm on Monday, March 3. The funeral mass will be at  St. Anthony of Padua Church in Westbrook at 10 am on Tuesday, March 4.  On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com.
