Obituary

WESTBROOK – Marguerite P. "Maggie" Harnois passed away at the Gorham House on July 15, 2018. Maggie was born on February 5, 1925 in Westbrook, the daughter of Horace Galipeau and Yvonne Brassard Galipeau. She was a child during The Great Depression and was forced to leave school before the end of the 8th grade to go to work to help support her large family. At first, it was baby-sitting for the Dana Warp Mill manager and when she was old enough she got a job in the woolen mill. At the outset of World War II, she became employed at the S.D. Warren paper mill in Westbrook. It was there that she met her first husband, "Gus" Gallant and went to work raising a small army of children. As soon as the older children were old enough to baby-sit, she slowly returned to the work force. For many years, she was employed as a nurse's aide in the maternity ward of the Westbrook Community Hospital and then doing physical exams for insurance companies. In 1983, through sheer determination, she was awarded the State of Maine High School Equivalency Diploma from Westbrook High School at age 58. Raising eight children forced her to become an active mom. She loved sports and any competition especially those that would accept a wager. And she exceled at skiing, tennis, golf, most card games, and swimming in the Atlantic, Sebago Lake, or the Howard Johnson Pool. She loved to sing and for 10 years was a member of the Magic of Christmas chorus. Maggie is predeceased by her first husband of 34 years, Joseph A. Gallant; her second husband of 17 years, Robert N. Harnois; her sisters Rita Galipeau and Mariette Galipeau Caron and two brothers, Robert and Leo Galipeau. Maggie also lost two sons, John at age 17 and Robert at age 34. Surviving Maggie, are her sister Alma Buotte and brother Omer Galipeau; her son David Gallant and his wife Jeannie; son Thomas Gallant; daughter Patricia Gallant Charette and her husband James; her son Paul Gallant and his wife Mary; her son William Gallant and his wife Jean; her daughter Maria Hume and her husband Edwin; and daughter-in-law Kathleen Jalbert and her husband Jay; along with 15 grand-children and 7 great-grand-children; and many extended family members including Anna and Ernie Steiner and Richard and Elizabeth Beilock. Special thanks to staff of the Gorham House, especially Heather Y., Michelle H., and Jennifer B, and Beacon Hospice for their wonderful care of Maggie. Visiting hours will be held 5-7 P.M Thursday, July 19 at the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee Funeral Home, 35 Church St, Westbrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00AM Friday, July 20, at St. Anthony of Padua Parish, 268 Brown St. Westbrook. Private Interment will follow at the St. Hyacinth Cemetery.
