Obituary

Lucille Anna Bernier, 90, of Westbrook, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014, with her son Deacon Peter by her side. She was born in Portland, the daughter of Edward and Exilia (Gagnon) Bernard.  She was raised in Westbrook and attended schools here. Lucille worked for Porteous, Mitchell & Braun, Rhines, Maine Central Railroad, A & P, Zayres, and Bradlees before retiring.  She was a lifelong member of St. Hyacinth Parish. Lucille was a former Miss Westbrook in 1945.  One of her favorite activities was dancing at the USO to the sounds of the Big Band Era.  In later years she enjoyed dancing with her son Paul.  She also loved gardening and shopping, especially with her daughter Celeste.  She was very active in the Knitting Club.  Lucille also enjoyed playing cards with family members and playing Beano.   She loved to travel with her husband Edward (Jerry) and her siblings and their spouses.  She loved being with people and had a wonderful gift of hospitality.  She loved animals, especially her dog "Cokie".  She made many good friends over the years and stayed in touch with them regularly.  Lucille adored all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Paul Bernier, and brothers Robert and Paul Bernard. She is survived by her husband of 68 years Edward Jerome Bernier of Westbrook; her son Deacon Peter Bernier and his wife Debra of Windham; her daughter Celeste Bell of Buxton; grandchildren Mark and his wife Leah Bernier, Katie Bernier, Heather Bernier, and Amanda Bell; and great grandchildren Max, Jake, and Cam Bernier. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 PM Thursday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.  A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Friday at St. Anthony's Church in Westbrook.  Interment will be in the spring at St. Hyacinth Cemetery.  On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 180 US Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074 or the Westbrook Animal Refuge League,.
