Obituary

Lucia Rocheleau, 86, died peacefully at her home after a brief illness, on Saturday, January 5, 2012. She was a true daughter of Portland, Maine: born and bred in Portland (a city she genuinely loved). She was born March 7, 1926. She was the second of ten children born to John Joseph Redlon and Margaret C. Earls Redlon. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1944. She attended Northeastern Business College for about one year. She then went to work as a legal secretary in Portland. She worked for a number of years at the law firm Verrill Dana Walker Philbrick & Whitehouse. During the late 1940s she spent a few years living and working in New York, NY, returning to Portland in 1950 (the return move motivated in part by homesickness). She married Francis C. Rocheleau and moved to Westbrook, Maine, in July 1951. She attended the University of Southern Maine and graduated with a degree in comparative literature in 1981. Lucia was of an essentially artistic temperament and was a great lover of the arts—all of them (the fine arts, the decorative arts, the performing arts, you name it). She worked as a volunteer docent at the Portland Museum of Art during the mid and late 1980s. She was predeceased by her daughters, Ann Rocheleau and Joan Rocheleau Cohen. She was predeceased by siblings Joan Johnson, Chiquita Mathias, Anne Armani Acton, Sonny Redlon, and Paul Redlon. She is survived by three sons: Robert of Lewiston, Maine, Peter of New York, New York and Westbrook, Maine, and James, of Hingham, Mass. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Joanne E. Rocheleau. She is also survived by four siblings: Edith Levesque, James Redlon, David Redlon, and Patricia Conley, all of greater Portland, and by four grandchildren. She is survived by her sister-in-law Sister Mary Gemma and her great friend Christine Wissley. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony's (St. Hyacinth's) Church in Westbrook on Thursday January 10 at 11:00 A.M. Arrangements are by the Blais & Hay Funeral Home 35 Church St. Westbrook.
