Cumberland Foreside- Lloyd Lorenzo Lathrop Jr. 77, of Cumberland Foreside, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2019 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, with his loving family by his side. Lloyd was born on October 2, 1941 to Lloyd Lathrop Sr. of Sydney, ME and Eleanor (Bean) Lathrop of Presque Isle, ME. He went to Brunswick High School and then joined the United States Marine Corp. After serving in the Marine Corp, he returned home, rented a room at the YMCA, and began his career at Blue Rock Industries in Westbrook, ME. He started out as a laborer and truck driver in his early 20's and eventually met Gloria (Clark), who also worked at Blue Rock as a secretary for the paving department. On their first date, he informed her that he intended to become the president of the company one day, and although, at the time, she laughed at his confidence, they were married within the year and by the time he reached 29 years of age, he had accomplished his goal. Lloyd and his bride "Glo" as he liked to call her, were married for a total of 52 years at the time of his passing. Lloyd spent the majority of his career at Blue Rock Industries serving as the President and CEO. He had a real passion for the construction industry, and he took a lot of pride in Blue Rock as a company. His father worked there before him, and each of his children as well as his son law all worked there for periods of time as well. Most importantly the team of people that worked alongside him throughout his career there, many of them from beginning to end, were like family to him. The decision to retire from Blue Rock and leave the company was one of the most difficult decisions he had ever faced. Lloyd never truly retired, though, and upon leaving Blue Rock, he proceeded to get involved in a wide variety of businesses from Maine to Florida that kept him occupied right up until the end. When people would ask him when he was going to retire, he would say, "I've never worked a day in my life." Besides working (which wasn't work apparently) Lloyd enjoyed traveling with his bride, NASCAR races, fishing with his son and grandsons when they were younger, taking his daughter and granddaughters, one on one, on shopping trips, and long distance motorcycling around the country and even around the world with his son in law and a couple of special friends. He was a generous man with a big heart and a very unique sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by many people. Lloyd was diagnosed with terminal cancer in September 2017 with a prognosis of six to nine months to live. Keeping in great physical shape, this was a true surprise to his loved ones. But being the fighter he was, Lloyd surpassed the original prognosis and went home to be with the Lord Jesus and his beloved granddaughter 16 months later. He fought the good fight, and now, with God's grace, he rests in peace. Along with his parents, Lloyd is predeceased by one brother, Raymond Kiefer and one sister, Kimmie Lathrop. He is also predeceased by one granddaughter, Kenzie Pizzo or "Mackie" as he liked to call her, who passed away March 2017 at 15 years of age. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Gloria (Clark) of Cumberland Foreside, one daughter Terri (Lathrop) Pizzo and her husband Joe Pizzo, and their daughter Adrienne Pizzo all of Portland. One son, Lloyd Lathrop III and his wife, Heidi, along with their two sons, Lloyd Lathrop IV "Lody" and Luke, all of Pownal. He is also survived by sisters, Lorraine (Lathrop) Black, of New Zealand and Lola (Lathrop) St. Pierre, of South Portland. A memorial service for Lloyd will be held Friday, February 15, 2019 at 3:00 P.M at the Maine Irish Heritage Center, formally St. Dominic's Church, 34 Gray St. Portland, ME 04012. A reception will immediately follow the service and all are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Lloyd's memory can be made to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital or the National Urea Cycle Disorder Foundation in honor of his beloved granddaughter, Mackenzie Glo Pizzo.
