Obituary

Lionel Caron, a lifelong resident of Westrbook Maine, passed away quietly on March 30, 2017 at the Gosnell House in Scarborough Maine. He was 87 and though he had endured a long battle with cancer he kept his spirits up, joking with family and caregivers right up to the time of his passing. Near the end of his disease his mind was still clear and he was able to choose his path which gave him great peace. Lionel grew up like many people of his time with not much in the way of material things but with strong family ties. Those ties lasted throughout his life and probably account for the importance he placed on his own family and the many lifelong friendships he had as well. He was married to his wife Olive for over 60 years, raised three children, and was an avid golfer, fisherman, and hunter. He loved his camping trips in the Maine wilderness and is personally responsible for having fed many black flies.  He was also a skilled carpenter and all round Mr. Fix-It. His favorite hobby was his garden and each year he and the local deer and ground hogs would engage in tactical maneuvers to see who would get to eat the vegetables. Barely able to walk in his last year he still insisted on having his garden and would lay across a milk crate while trying to dig holes for his plants. He had a long and fulfilling life and is missed by all who he left behind, but is now in a better place. Lionel was predeceased by seven of his eight siblings, his wife Olive Caron and his daughter Donna French. He is survived by his sister Jeanne Caron, two sons Mike and Dennis Caron, their respective spouses Julie and Lourdes,  son-in-law John French, his grandchildren (Nicole Lebel & Melissa Crean and their respective spouses Mark and Hugh, Scott Caron and his wife Amanda, Jillian Bjorn-Caron, Danielle Claire, Cristina Leake, Alexander Caron, and Benjamin Caron) and great grandchildren (Hugh and Cole Crean, Sam and Jacob Claire, Abigail Lebel, and Addison and Makayla Caron). His funeral will be at the Parish of St Anthony of Padua, 268 Brown ST., Westbrook Maine on Monday April 10th, 2017 at 10:30 AM.  The family is grateful for the care providers he had and for the end of life care he received from the fine people at Gosnell House. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Salvation Army, St Jude's Hospital, or local animal shelters.
