GORHAM—Lewis Lester Thompson Jr., 80, passed away on December 8, 2017, due to several long illnesses. He was born October 22, 1937, a son of Lewis Sr. and Delores (Bibson) Thompson. In 1978, Lew earned his GED from the Urban Living Center and then attended college at Santa Fe and other Florida State Colleges. He worked at the Perkins School of the Blind and in 1983 Lew moved back to Portland where he worked for the Department of Rehabilitation of Maine. Lew married the love of his life, Joyce Fitzgerald on June 17, 1988 and they honeymooned on Monhegan Island. Lew loved lighthouses, his favorite were Nubble Light in York and Portland Head Light. He enjoyed anything nautical and was a member of the Monhegan Lighthouse Museum and the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. In addition to the ocean, Lew loved camping and some of his favorite memories were camping with Joyce. Lew was also a man of strong faith and was a longtime member of the Highland Cliff Advent Christian Church in Windham. Lew is survived by his wife of 29 years, Joyce Thompson of Gorham; a sister, Camilla Smith and her husband Milford of Naples; and cousins, Denny Rice and her husband Jon of Michigan, and Betsey Cole and her husband Leslie of Cushing, ME. He was predeceased by his parents, Lewis Thompson Sr. and Delores Thompson. A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 15, 2017 at 11:00am at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress Street, Portland, ME 04102. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lew's name may be made to the Highland Cliff Advent Christian Church, 96 Highland Cliff Road, Windham, ME 04062.
