Obituary

WINDHAM—Leonard J. Jacques, 82, of Windham, died at Maine Medical Center on February 2, 2017. He was born on June 8, 1934, one of eleven children, to Joseph and Alma (Bennett) Jacques. Leonard grew up on the River Road in Windham and attended school in Westbrook. On August 25, 1956, he married Helena (Parker) and together they raised one daughter, Michele. Leonard's career, business, and family interests were of many, including becoming the Chief of Police of Windham. Many people would also recognize him at his restaurant, Len's Diner, on Main Street in Westbrook. Most notably, he spent 32 years as a correctional officer at the Maine Youth Center (now Long Creek) helping guide troubled teenagers. Leonard was a skilled carpenter, building and selling beautiful picnic tables, swings, and other wood products at his home on the River Road. He built three homes in Windham as well. Leonard enjoyed selling antiques and Christmas trees which was a wonderful holiday tradition with his family. An active and independent person, Leonard looked forward to local church suppers, and the senior meal every week at St. Anne's in Gorham where he often joked with friends. Leonard also enjoyed going to the Westbrook Dunkin Donuts every morning and rides in the summer in his beloved Thunderbird. Although Leonard wore many hats throughout his lifetime, family was his pride and joy. He loved his family immensely, especially his granddaughter, Tiffanie and her sons, Micah and Jaret. Leonard will be remembered as a hard-working, fun-loving, family man with a heart of gold; the patriarch of his family. He is survived by his daughter, Michele Gould and her husband, "Rocky"; granddaughter, Tiffanie Powers and her husband, Jon; great grandsons, Micah and Jaret Powers; a sister, Constance Lindsey; and friend of many years, Barbara Cousins. Leonard was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Helena; brothers, Thomas, Marcel, Urbain, Raynold, Burtrand Jacques; sisters, Anita Haines, Blanche Turcotte, and two baby siblings. The family would like to extend sincere thanks and gratitude to all the staff at Maine Medical Center, Maine Cardio, and Maine Nephrology for their excellent care of Leonard. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 6pm to 8pm at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham, ME 04062. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 11 at 3pm at the funeral chapel. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Hyacinth Cemetery in Westbrook.
