Obituary

Windham – Leon "Manny" Orin Thompson, 83, passed away, with his loving family by his side on May 24, 2017, at the VA hospital hospice in Togus, after a brief illness. Leon was born in Portland, on August 2, 1933, the son of Leslie A. and Kathryn Fogg Thompson. He graduated from Portland High School in 1951, and entered the service as a communications specialist during the Korean War. When he returned home he attended SMVTI, graduating with an electrical degree. He married Barbara Burnell on August 9, 1955, and they had 5 children, Lee, Debbie, Guy, Cyndi, and Beth. They divorced in 1980 after 25 years of marriage, but remained friends throughout the years. He was employed by Western Union for many years before returning to school and obtaining his Master Electrician's license. He was self-employed until his retirement in 1996. Manny loved the outdoors. Neighborhood children remember Dad piling everyone into the back of the truck to head up to Windham to go for a swim at the "Lot" on the Presumpscot River. Dad eventually built his home there, and has lived there ever since. There were many great family get togethers, with aunts, uncles and cousins at the Lot. He will be remembered by many for his quick wit and attention to detail. His son-in-law, Bob, was especially thankful for the opportunity to learn about wiring, plumbing and carpentry as well as a host of other "life" lessons. Many of his children and grandchildren have the same love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. In more recent years he enjoyed visiting with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren while sitting by the pool or the lake to enjoy the sunshine. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Leslie and Norman; and sisters, Alicia and Donna. Leon is survived by his 5 children and his 13 grandchildren; Leon, his wife Colette (Michaud), their children, Katie, Kyle, Kennith; Deborah Jacobs, her husband Robert, their children Tabitha and Travis; Guy, his wife, Laurie (Pompeo); their children, Jeffery, Matthew and Peter; Cynthia Perkins and her husband Skip; their children James Napolitano, Sarah Daigle, Serena Napolitano, and Anthony Perkins; and Beth Madison and her daughter Abby. Also surviving are four sisters; Patricia McDonough, Karlene Traulsen, Sandra King and Linda Morrill, 9 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. In lieu of cards and flowers, please make donations in Leon's memory to Togus Springs Hospice Veterans Facility, 1 VA Center, Augusta, ME 04330. A celebration of life will be held later in the summer. Arrangements by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham.
