Obituary

WESTBROOK – Leland R. Lunt, 89, died on November 10, 2017. He was born in Portland, on April 7, 1928, the son of Charles and Edith (Stanley) Lunt. As a child, Leland would summer in Frenchboro on Long Island and on neighboring Swan's Island with his uncles. He often attended the annual Frenchboro lobster picnic, a tradition that he held close to stay in touch with his heritage. He proudly served his country for 18 months in the US Navy on the Oregon City, a Heavy Cruiser, in Cuba. Leland attended Portland schools, graduating from Portland High School in 1947. On March 8, 1946, Leland married Jane Ohlund, and together the pair raised their four children. Over the years, Leland held a variety of occupations, mainly commercial food equipment service. He was a police officer in South Portland for a few years, returning to commercial food equipment repair/sales. In semi-retirement he was a bus driver. He also put a lot of work into the family home on Pettingill Pond, winterizing the camp, building stone walls, and countless other projects to ensure it was a destination for their family and friends to gather with cook outs and enjoyment in the "big pool" as Leland called it. In his retirement, he maintained fruit, vegetable & flower gardens at Millbrook Estates while enjoying the outdoor's sun and its warmth. Leland is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Jane; children, Lorene Black and husband Joseph, Stephen Lunt and partner Cheryl Washburn, Susan Simonson and husband Samuel, and Jeffrey Lunt and wife Jayne, 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Leland is predeceased by his sister, Beverly McNeal. A graveside service will be celebrated at 11am on Friday, November 17, 2017 at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland. Arrangements by the Windham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee.
