Obituary

WINDHAM–Larry Jordan Berry, 90, of Windham, passed away peacefully on June 9 surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born in Windham on October 18, 1934, the only child of Lena (Secord) Berry and Lewis Berry. He spent his childhood in Westbrook and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1952. Larry had fond memories of time spent at his grandfather's camp on Panther Pond in Raymond. Larry worked for Main Line Fence Co., where he served as a bookkeeper/office manager for 44 years until his retirement in 1997. He married Anne Elder on March 31, 1964. He and Anne shared a love of music, and together they were members of the Chopin Club, Marston-Kotzschmar Club, and the Maine Federation of Music Clubs. Larry and Anne, alongside brother-in-law, Warren brought the gift of music to many people in the community as The King's Trio. Larry enjoyed playing a role in annual colonial church services at The Old Red Church in Standish, and was active in the Grange. Larry made a life-long study of the piano, and became a master of the instrument. Many were blessed by Larry's prowess at the keyboard, including his adoring family, the several students whom he taught, as well as those whose performances he judged at local competitions. Larry played piano and organ for several churches, most recently, Sebago Center Community Church where he served for several decades. Even in recent weeks, Larry continued to play his piano. When asked recently what he was most proud of in his life, Larry chose music. "Uncle Larry" was known for his perennially good spirits, fun-loving sense of humor, and enthusiasm for dessert. He loved the birds and wildlife around his home, flowering shrubs and pond lilies, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, reading his Bible and library books by the dozen. He loved swimming in his younger years. Uncle Larry loved his family and cherished his friends. Most of all, Uncle Larry loved his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. Larry is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Cindy Elder; his niece Andrea Elder-Bruns (Ben Bruns); his nephew Darren Elder (wife, Jodi and daughter, Moira); his nephew Douglas Elder (daughter, Olivia and son, Warren); as well as several cousins. Larry was predeceased by his wife, Anne and brother-in-law, Warren. Larry's family is incredibly thankful for the team of in-home caregivers who have lovingly met Larry's every need over the last few years. The family also extends deepest appreciation to the team at Gentiva Hospice. Every team member treated Larry as if he were their very own "Uncle Larry," and we are so thankful for the way they helped us navigate the hardest days. Visiting hours will be held 3 p.m. to 5 p.m with a celebration of life at 5 p.m, Wednesday, June 18th at Dolby Blais and Segee Funeral Home, 434 River Road, Windham, Maine. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Windham Historical Society at P.O. Box 1475 Windham, Maine 04062.
