Obituary

Komlan Latè, popularly known as "Latino", an immigrant from Togo, West Africa, a 19-year resident of Westbrook, was found dead in his Westbrook apartment on December 20th, 2020. The cause of death remains unknown at this time. Komlan was a kind, caring and loving person. He brought joy and laughter to everyone he encountered. Komlan was a brother, father-like, life experience adviser, supportive figure to all those who were around him. He never complained but always showed gratitude for the little things that he had. Komlan was never bothered by day to day hardships because he knew that it was always possible to get beyond them. While Komlan was in Togo, he experienced a traumatic life changing event in 1993. As he was a soldier by profession, he found himself among southern Togolese who were rounded up and slated to be executed by firing squad at a military camp known as "Camp R.I.T". At the mass execution, they were lined up with their backs against the camp's wall facing the firing squad. The person immediately to his left was shot and fell on him. Due to the impact and given the noise and chaos of the moment, Komlan thought he too, was shot. He fell and remained on the ground for the rest of the ordeal. Komlan recalls waking up in an open mass grave and crawling then walking tirelessly until he reached safety. Because of this adverse experience, Komlan had profound gratitude for everything in his life. It is as if he saw everything after the awful event as a blessing. He always thanked God and appreciated everything he got. Services are pending and will be posted shortly. To give Komlan Latè a dignified and proper farewell, his nephew, Follyvi Alognon, and his trusted life long friend, John Ochira have set up a fundraiser. His family appreciates any contribution towards his services.
