Gorham-Kenneth P. Mains, 86, passed away at the Barron Center in Portland, on Sunday, February 25, 2018. The son of Ernest and Frances (Huston) Mains, he was born in South Portland on November 22, 1931. He graduated from Deering High School in 1949. After high school he joined the Army and served during the Korean War. He was very proud of his military service belonging to both the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign War. He served on several state Legion committees, was the past commander of the Smith Wagner Legion, and the Cumberland County Council First District. Kenneth also belonged to the Saccarappa Odd Fellows of Westbrook, and enjoyed working Beano at both the lodge and at the Legion Hall. After his discharge from the Army Kenneth worked for S.D. Warren Paper Company in the luster coat department for 13 years, before taking a job as a mail carrier with the Gorham Post Office. He retired from the Post Office in January of 1987. He married his wife Alice L. Smith on June 20, 1953. In his retirement he and Alice enjoyed traveling to 45 of the 50 states. Some of the highlights of these trips were driving to Branson Missouri, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Florida, Cody Wyoming, and New Orleans. They also went on a cruise to Alaska. Besides traveling Kenneth also enjoyed watching Nascar, Red Sox, and the New England Patriots, camping and snowmobiling. In the 1970's Ken and a group of his friends rode snowmobiles from Gorham to Jackman where their wives met them at the end of the trail. He was proud of his grandsons and cherished spending time with them and watching them play sports. Besides his parents, Kenneth was predeceased by his sister Ann Marston and her husband David, his brother Richard Mains, and his sister in laws Florence and Shirley. He is survived by his wife Alice with whom he would have celebrated 65 years of marriage in June, his children, Keith Mains and his wife Sue of Gorham, Laurie Mains of Gorham, and Greg Mains, and his wife Lee Ann of Gorham, his three grandsons Eric, Timothy, and Aaron Mains, one great grandson Eric Mains Jr., his brother Ernest Mains Jr. of Westbrook, and his grand furbabies Tarzan and Jane. Ken's family would like to thank the staff of the Barron Center for all the wonderful care that they provided to him and to his family. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside committal service on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the South Gorham Cemetery, Burnham Road, Gorham.
