Windham- Kathleen E Whirlwind-Soldier, 79, of Windham, passed away at St. Joseph's Manor, in Portland, on Monday, June 26, 2017. The daughter of Frederick and Agnes (Sawyer) Kelley, she was born in Windham on August 25, 1937. She attended Windham schools, and upon graduation as valedictorian, from Windham High School, she moved to Portland where she worked at a bank. She later took a job at the Merchants Bank in Boston, and then in New York. While in New York she met George Whirlwind-Soldier and they married. They moved to Pennsylvania, and then to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. They adopted their son David at this time. She returned to Windham later and started working for L.C. Andrew. She also started working as a writer for the Suburban News Newspaper, which later became the Lake Region Weekly. She was an active member in the Windham Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion. She was also very active in the Windham Historical Society, where she was just recently recognized as the "historian" for the town of Windham. Kathleen is survived by her son David Whirlwind-Soldier of Windham, her brothers Frederick (Sammy) A. Kelley and his wife Carole, of Windham, and Russell E. Kelley and his wife Betsy of Naples, her sisters Patricia A. Kelley of Windham, Ellen M. Jordan and her husband Walter of South Portland, and Barbara L. Kelley of Windham. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Chase Cemetery on the Highland Cliff Rd. in Windham. Arrangements are under the care of Dolby Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you consider a donation in Kathleen's memory to the Windham Historical Society P.O. Box 1475 Windham, Maine 04062, which will be used to set up a scholarship in Kay's Name.
