Obituary

Portland- June Selma (Larson) McLeod, 87, passed away at her home on November 19, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. The daughter of John and Mildred (Westerberg) Larson, she was born in Portland on May 15, 1930. She grew up on her family's 100 acre farm in Westbrook. She attended local schools and graduated from Westbrook High School. She enjoyed her childhood living in the country, smelling the newly mowed hay and wild flowers as she walked barefoot on country roads with her best friend Mary Carmichael. Life was slow, simple and quiet. The air was clean and the sky was blue. She met her husband, Norman T. McLeod, when he was home on military leave. Over a year later, a July wedding was planned on the lawn of the family farm. Invitations were sent but things changed fast. War broke out on June 25, 1950. Norman's leave was cancelled and he was sent off to Korea. He returned eight months later and they were married in February. June and Norman flew to California to start their 67 years of marriage together. A month later they arrived in Hawaii and spent a wonderful honeymoon on the white sands of Waikiki. Soon after, Norman was called back to Korea and June flew back to Westbrook to spend time with her family. For the rest of their Navel life, June and Norman traveled up and down the Californian and eastern coasts. After 21 years, the couple retired to Portland where they bought a home on 3 ½ acres of land and have lived there ever since. June's whole life has been devoted to both her family and church. Most especially, she enjoyed all her children and grandchildren playing on the sandy beach, jumping off the dock or fishing at the Highland Lake cottage she and her husband owned for 51 years. June was also a faithful servant of Saint Ansgar Lutheran Church for many years. Her service to the church included the Alter Guild, singing in local nursing homes with Paul's Pals and Senior Saints, working with the sewing group making quilts, school bags and personal care packages for Lutheran World Relief Global Outreach. She also co-organized the annual Scandinavian Church Fairs and participated in numerous church suppers and events with her cousin Helen Vose. June volunteered many hours of her life to the Portland community while working with Project Feed, Preble Street Soup Kitchen and serving as a voting poll warden during yearly elections. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Elmer Larson and grandson Scott McLeod. She is survived by her husband Norman, her son Thomas McLeod and wife Susan of Gorham, her daughters Laurie Anderson of Gorham, Diana Mathews and husband Sterling of Gorham, and Jennifer Miller of Westbrook. She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren, Jessica, Thomas Jr., Michelle, Miranda, Kelly, Jeffrey, Michael, Kayla and Linnaea; 6 great grandchildren, Ashley, Sean, Arianna, Ryenne, Toren and Ryker; and 2 great-great grandchildren, Maxwell and Vante. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Friday, November 24, 2017 from 5-7 PM at Dolby, Blais & Segee Funeral Chapel, 35 Church St. Westbrook. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, 515 Woodford St. Portland. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook. Our family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers from Hospice of Southern Maine for the wonderful care our wife, mother and grandmother received during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route 1 # 1, Scarborough ME 04074.
