Obituary

June Beverly Meehan Hawkes passed from this earthly life on October 16, 2025. It is with conviction that her family is assured that she experienced great joy and peace as she joined her one true love and husband, Richard N. Hawkes, their son, Eugene, and their son-in-law John Hagar in heaven. June was born on August 24, 1934, the second daughter of Lester H. and Florence Bell Meehan. When June was a toddler, the family lived on Windham Center Road across the street from the Hawkes farm. They moved to Duck Pond Corner in Westbrook where June and her siblings – older sister Nancy, younger sisters LaVerne and Sharon, and brother Glenn grew up and were educated in Westbrook schools. The girls attended a one-room schoolhouse for elementary school. As a young woman, June was the organist at Highland Lake Church. After graduating from Westbrook High School in 1952 and working in Portland for SunLife Insurance of Canada, June dated Richard Hawkes whom she had met as a toddler. They married on May 4, 1956. June and Dick then traveled from Maine to Tulare, California where Hawkes family relatives were residing. Until her death, June shared many, many fond memories of the time she and Dick had spent in California, and she stayed in constant touch with all the relatives out there. After the birth of daughter Becky Lynn in California, Dick and June returned to Windham, living and working on the Hawkes farm alongside Dick's brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Florence. Born in Portland on October 2, 1959, son Eugene joined big sister Becky, June remained on the farm until December of 2023 when she needed the services of assisted living. She and Dick operated apple orchards, greenhouses, a cider mill, and logged family property on upper Nash Road and contributed to the Hawkes Roadside Stand operated by Frank and Florence. June and Dick were the first to plan and plant beautiful floral displays on each of the islands at the Rotary at the intersection of Routes 302 and 202. When Dick passed away, June single-handedly kept the huge greenhouses and the cider mill in operation and was for 25 years a valued member of the staff at Windham Public Library. She was a dedicated volunteer at church suppers and a huge contributor of baked goods, crafts, and floral arrangements with the Women's Fellowship of Windham Hill Church. June was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Richard N. Hawkes, their son Eugene Hawkes, son-in-law John Hagar, and June's sister, Sharon Scammon. She is survived by her daughter, Becky Lynn Hagar of Windham, sisters Nancy Gowen and LaVerne Hustus of Westbrook and brother Glenn Meehan (Doris) of Windham. She is also survived by many in-law relatives in the Hawkes family whom she loved dearly as well as many, many nieces and nephews from the Hawkes and Meehan families. The family is incredibly thankful to Lisa Brent, Wendy Loring (and Daisy), Sally Bannen, Doris Meehan, and Lea Hennigar for their continual care and companionship in June's final years of life. The support of these people encouraged June to walk outside, do craft projects and some helped with her favorite chosen activity of completing 300-piece puzzles, sometimes as quickly as in one day! You all brought her joy in a life that was difficult for her. A celebration of June's life will be held on November 22, 2025 at 1:00pm at Windham Hill United Church of Christ, 140 Windham Center Road, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Burial will be private. Any who wish to honor June's life in lieu of flowers, contributions are welcome at the charity of your choice or at "Friends of The Windham Library," 217 Windham Center Road, Windham, ME 04062.
