Joseph Rudolphe "Rudy" Zaharis of Westbrook, passed away on Thursday May 21, 2015. He was born on Dec 31, 1925, the son of Leona Aube and George Zahares. The middle child with 3 brothers and one sister, predeceased by Sidney, Donald, Alcide, and Anita. Rudy grew up working in the family business, an"IGA" grocery store and started working in the store at age 13. He worked until going into the Navy Air Corp after graduating from Westbrook High school. He attended Yale University while in the Air Corp and then was put into the regular Navy and served abroad an LSM 397 for the rest of the war. After the war, he went back to working in the store for 18 years until it burned down in 1962. After that he went to work for New York Life as an agent. He was very successful and was in the top 10% of the sales agents for 27 consecutive years. He gained money, rewards, and other accomplishments over the 30 year period of time, as well as his CLU degree. One of his favorite hobbies was playing golf. He was a lifetime member of Gorham Country Club. He had 5 "Hole in Ones" over that period of time at different courses. He also loved to travel all over the country, Cape Cod, Florida, and Myrtle Beach. Rudy was also a big fan and loved to watch the Red Sox and the Patriots play. He was elected to the City Council in 1958 and served his term. Then he was made police Commissioner for six years and was very proud to have accomplished many things. He married Shirley Peak and had two boys, Dean and Glenn. He leaves behind his two sons, four grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed as he was a very loving and caring father and grandfather and would do anything for them anytime. Visiting hours will be held at Blais and Hay Funeral Home on Wednesday May 27, from 9-11 am with a funeral mass following at 11.
