Saco Joseph J. DelPonte Jr, 82, died November 24, 2017, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, after a year long battle with cancer. Joe was born on May 24, 1935 in Portland, a son of Joseph J. DelPonte, Sr. and Cinderella (Di Biase) DelPonte. Joe grew up in the Munjoy Hill neighborhood and graduated from Portland High School in 1953. He joined the Army Reserve in 1954 and served 6 years. He was a retail clothing salesman for several years before becoming associated with Yankee Distributors as a route salesman and later with Cumberland York Distributors. He loved meeting and working with people. Joe Married Virginia A. "Jean" (Nelsen) DelPonte on July 17, 1955 and their loving marriage endured for 63 years. They moved to Westbrook and soon became the proud parents of two sons, Vincent J. DelPonte and Larri G. DelPonte. Joe was very proud of his Italian heritage and would often talk of his father coming from Italy as a young man and opening a shoe shop business on Brighton Avenue in Portland for much of his adult life. He loved sports and was an avid Yankees fan as was his brother, Ralph. Joe and Ralph took great joy in antagonizing their father, a Red Sox fan. After retirement Joe and Jean moved to Saco and did some traveling to Italy and Hawaii and were able to spend more time with their family and grandchildren. They enjoyed watching their grandchildren play sports. Joe was predeceased by his parents and brother. In addition to his wife Joe is survived by his sons, Vincent DelPonte and his partner Brian Bragdon of Portland, and Larri DelPonte and his wife Jane (Morin) of Westbrook; grandchildren, Amberly and Dustin, sisters in – law, Sylvia DelPonte of Sebastian, FL, and Patricia Baker of Saco, and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held from 5:00PM – 7:00PM Thursday November 30, at the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby Blais & Segee 35 Church Street, Westbrook, where a memorial service will be held 1:00PM Friday December 1.
