John G.
Winant
Mar 6, 1944 — Oct 28, 2026
John Gilbert Winant, 82, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2026, in his childhood home in Raymond, Maine. John was born March 6, 1944, in Portland Maine, the son of late Mr. Milton Gaertner Winant and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (MacDonald) Winant.
John dedicated many years of his life to public service, retiring after a long and respected career as an Operations Supervisor for the Maine Department of Corrections. He was an honorary member of the American Legion and proudly volunteered his time placing American flags on veterans’ graves at local cemeteries each Memorial Day. He was a lifelong member and volunteer with Raymond Village Community Church, where he helped care for the church lawn. John was a man of kindness and quiet generosity and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. Through his work and his everyday life, he demonstrated a strong work ethic, a sense of responsibility, and a willingness to help others. The family camp in Eustis, Maine, held a special place in his heart, providing a place to relax, make memories, and enjoy the beauty of Maine. He and his beloved wife of 65 years, Rosemary, also enjoyed spending their winters in Florida as snowbirds. At home, John had a special love for his cats, who brought him companionship and joy.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Sgt. Milton G. Winant Jr. USAF and his grandson, Troy D. Doyle. He is survived by his wife Rosemary B. (Viel) Winant, his brother Roderick Winant, sister Shirley Ball and her husband Ira, sisters-in-law Darlene Viel, Doreen Leighton and Dianne Chamberlain, his children Marybeth Crivello, Robin Winant, Melanie Domas, Daniel Winant, Jeromy Winant, Peter Winant and his wife Ellen (Stuart) Winant; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.
Arrangements were handled by Dolby, Blais & Segee in Windham, Maine. A private family remembrance will be held later. Those who wish to make donations in John’s name please do so to the Raymond Village Community Church, PO Box 285, Raymond, ME. 04071.
