SCARBOROUGH - John L. True, Jr. passed away October 19, 2018 at the Gosnell Memorial House in Scarborough, ME after a long illness. He was born July 5, 1946 in Westbrook, Maine, son of the late John and R. Lois True. John graduated from Windham High School in 1964 as President of his class. John was a graduate of the former SMVTI, University of Southern Maine and the Executive Fire Officer program at the National Fire Academy. John was a dedicated husband to his beloved wife, Brenda Hodgdon True, for nearly fifty years. John and Brenda loved to travel and enjoyed their yearly trips to Aruba. A member of the South Portland Fire Department for thirty-six years, John rose through the ranks and became chief of the department. He held this position for ten years, retiring in 2003. John was past president of both the Maine State and Cumberland County Fire Chiefs' Association. After retirement, he was the coordinator of the Presumpscot Valley Hazmat Team. In his younger years, he was member of the South Windham and Scarborough Fire Departments. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Wayne True. He is survived by his wife Brenda, children Julie Kingsley (Eric) of South Portland and Scott True (Peg Bessey) of Buxton, and four beloved grandchildren: Peyton True, Jack Kingsley, Rachel Kingsley, and Nola True. John is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. John was very proud of his children and grandchildren's many accomplishments. Visiting hours will be held Friday, November 2nd from 5:00PM – 7:00PM at the Windham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee 434 River Road, Windham. A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Portland Fire Department, 30 Anthoine Street, South Portland, Maine 04106 for the purchase of Particulate Blocking Hoods to protect Firefighters from developing occupational cancer.
