Obituary

John Merrifield has gone home to be with the Lord! John was born in Brattleboro, Vt. and attended Hinsdale NH schools. He served as a sergeant during the Vietnam conflict from 1964 to 1967 in France and worked at a depot supplying troops to Vietnam. He was instrumental in setting up a depot in England as well. He traveled extensively in Europe and found his father's Cecil's grave in Belgium. He was killed in March of 1945 during WWII. Mr. Merrifield and his wife, the former Alicia Ronfeldt were married in May of 1967 and made their home in Nh in 1974. He secured employment as a crane operator for Merril Transportation in Portland. He has been with them since July of 1974. In 2004 he was promoted to unitizing foreman. For thirty-two years he was responsible for putting up the Christmas tree in Monument Square. He was a “jack of all trades” and a tireless worker. He was happiest when given a challenge to do and the PD Merril considered him a “cornerstone” of the Merril Marine Terminal that was later bought by Sprague Energy in Portland. John is survived by his fiancé Cora Scott and their daughter Candis Holland in Florida and his son John Jr. Merrifield and his wife Sabrina Merrifield of Standish, also five grandchildren, Jennifer of Ocala Florida, Kellie Bishop of Arkansas, Sabria Merrifield of Connecticut and his grandsons Matthew Haskell Merrifield of Mass and Gio Merrifield of Maryland. His great granddaughters are Keirsten Maynard and Hannah Maynard. He also leaves behind his late sister Shirley Scammon and a late brother Earl both of Scarborough also Rita Woodman of South Portland and a brother Larry Hastings of Florida. His youngest son, Jason passed away in 1997. He was a past member of the Standish Evangelical Free Church, and he belonged to the Kiwanis Club in Standish for a while he was also a member at the VFW. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans, 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250 also any Animal Rescue.
