Obituary

John P. Malick Sr.,  88, of Ennis St., passed away peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2012, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. John was born in Weirton, WV, the son of Robert and Theresa (Verbanic) Malick.  He attended school in West Virginia.   He was a caddy for many years at Williams Country club in Weirton, WV and had dreams of becoming a professional golfer. After the attack on Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the Marine Corps.  He received his training at Parris Island and was later sent to Portsmouth, NH and Portland, ME for Guard duty.  While in Portland he met the love of his live, Beverly Irish.  He served in the Central and Southwest Pacific.  During his Troops assault on the Marianas Island, he was wounded in action on Guam, losing his left arm.  He received the Purple Heart Medal for his valor. He was discharged to the Philadelphia Naval Hospital and later returned to Portland to marry Beverly.  After graduating from Northeastern School of Accounting John began a career with the Internal Revenue Service from 1949 until his retirement over 30 years later. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of the St. Mary's Men's Club, the Greater Portland Council of Catholic Men, the Westbrook Senior Citizens, American Legion Post #62, the Order of the Purple Heart, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign War. John enjoyed sports and loved to play golf, which he was able to do very well with one arm.  He enjoyed playing checkers, long walks and traveling with Beverly. John leaves behind his wife of 66 years Beverly (Irish) Malick of Westbrook; two sons, John P. Malick Jr. of Biddeford, Stephen C. Malick and his wife Anne of Nova Scotia; two daughters, Jane E. Malick of So. Portland, Lisa M. Filippelli and her husband Peter of So. Portland; six grandchildren Paul E. Malick and his wife Elissa, Andrew Malick, Melissa Roberts and husband Christopher, Amanda Brook and husband Tim, Chad McCatherin, and Michael Filippelli; six great grandchildren, Evelyn Roberts, Lucy Roberts, Marion Roberts, Cody Brook, Natalie Brook, and Caleb Malick. Visiting hours will be from 9 to 11 AM Tuesday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook, where a funeral service will follow at 11 AM.  Interment with military honors will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland. The family would like to thank the staff at Seaside Nursing Home for the love and care given to John for nearly 4 years there.  Also to the doctors and nurses at Maine Medical Emergency Room, the Gibson Pavilion, and especially to the staff at the Gosnell Hospice for the loving and peaceful care given to John during his last days.   In leiu of flowers the family wishes you to donate to the charity of your choice.
