Obituary

Westbrook John G. Lestage Sr. "Guy", 89, formerly of St. Petersburg, FL and Windham, ME, passed away peacefully Monday, March 16, 2015 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. Born in Westbrook, ME on Ocober 11, 1925, he was the son of Zepherin and Melanie(Valcourt) Lestage and one of 13 children. Guy started working at S.D. Warren Paper Co in 1942. When World War II broke out he proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy, serving as a Navy Corpsman. He saw battle at numerous places, most notably at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. He also served in the Korean Conflict. In 2010, Guy attended the 65th Iwo Jima Reunion Celebration in Washington, DC, and was honored by all the attention and respect paid to the veterans.  Guy was employed at S.D. Warren for 44 years, retiring in 1986. Guy appreciated the simple things in life: hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, raising, and training beagles for rabbit hunting, and gardening. He experimented with many varieties of unusual plants and seeds, often times growing items just for the challenge. He was truly a testament to the Greatest Generation. An independent and generous man, he was devoted to family and friends. He had a strong work ethic, loved solving problems, and valued life-long learning. A loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he enjoyed having family around. Upon retirement, he became a snowbird, spending winterd in Florida and summers in Maine. Guy was predeceased by his first wife of 39 years, Marjorie (Wood) and second wife of 24 years, Anna (Pratt) Lestage; a granddaughter Shannon Wright; great grandchildren Breanne Wright and Chase Lestage; his sisters Olive Chaplin, Theresa Robichaud, and Yolanda McCard; brothers Ovide, Gerard, Claude, Andeol, Maurice, Roland, and Philip. He is survived by his sons John Lestage Jr. and wife Cathy of Standish, and Bruce Lestage of Warrensburg, MO; daughters Carol Brewster and husband Tom of Gorham and Linda Wright and husband Terry of Gorham; brothers Lubert of Perrysburg, OH and Andre and wife Colleen of St. Petersburg, FL; grandchildren Nicole Stevenson (Henry), J Gregory Lestage III (Patty), Kirk Nadeau (Addie), Derek Nadeau (Jamie), Bethany Woods (Brian), Terry Wright Jr (Darcey)., Darryl Wright (Leah), Heather Lestage, Alicia Ulmer, Rachel Lestage and 18 great grandchildren. He is also survived by stepchildren James Pratt (Brenda), Kathleen LaVallee (Steven), Maureen Kostka (Jonathan), Michael Pratt (LeeAnn), Rick Pratt (Annie), John Pratt (Nancy), Jeffrey Pratt (Ernestine),; step grandchildren Christopher LaVallee, Jennifer Foster, Tory Dyer, Stacey Turkington, Jackie Pratt, Ethan Pratt, Zackary Hanson, Jeffrey Pratt Jr., and 8 step great-grandchildren. He touched the lives of many including several nieces and nephews, and life-long friends. Guy's family would like to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans' Home for the outstanding care they provided him during his stay. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name (John G. Lestage Sr.) to: The Maine Veterans' Home, 290 US Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM Friday, April 10, at St. Anthony's Church in Westbrook.
