Obituary

WESTBROOK—John Gregory Lee, 98, died peacefully on July 23, 2018 at Maine Medical Center, surrounded by loved ones. John was born on January 7, 1920, to the late John and Elizabeth (O'Toole) Lee. John spent his formative years in Portland and was a graduate of Portland High School. After graduation, John joined the United States Army and in 1943 he married the love of his life, Rose Woods. John had a long tenure in the military. He served our country during World War II where he was stationed in Europe and fought in Battle of the Bulge. John also served in the Korean War and he retired from the military as Lieutenant Colonel in 1981. John was the oldest veteran recognized earlier this year on the Honor Flight to Washington DC. In addition to his military service, John spent twenty-five years working as a Linesman for New England Telephone. John was an avid golfer and had retained the title "Oldest Member of Gorham Country Club" for the last several years. He played his last round of golf a week before he passed. Some of John's other favorite pastimes included; summers up to the family camp on Sebago Lake, hunting, and fishing. He is survived by his children, Gregory Lee of Waterboro; Sandra Willand of Taunton, MA; Rebecca Adams and her husband Gary of Scarborough; Joanne Eldridge and her husband Thomas of Westbrook; grandchildren, Lt. Col. Brook Lee and his wife Christina; William Willand and his wife Julia; Jennifer Gavin and her husband James; Shawn Adams and Emily Sharples, Jodie Goodman and her husband William, and Erica Langdon and her husband, Chris; 10 great grandchildren; a brother, Fr. Thomas Lee of Portland; and a sister, Roberta Loring of Portland. He was preceded in death by his wife Rose Lee; and siblings, Helen Lane, Elizabeth Smart, and Dorothy Bartlett. Services for John will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John's name may be made to Honor Flight Maine, PO Box 1770, Portland, ME 04104.
