Obituary

WESTBROOK- John “Johnny” William Doughty, 73, of Westbrook, Maine, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough, following a brief hospitalization with pneumonia.

John was born on November 4, 1952, in Portland, Maine, to Kendrick and Frances Doughty. He grew up in Portland and was an active and energetic youth, playing Little League for the Pratt Abbott team, running cross country and indoor track. His love for sports remained a constant throughout his life. For most of his teen years, he lived with his best friend Wayne and his parents Pauline and Bernie Cilley of Portland.

John loved driving trucks and spent most of his life working as a driver. His first driving job was with Sebago Ice and Oil & he later drove for companies such as Pepsi, Pioneer Plastics, and Lachance Brick. While working at Lachance Brick, he suffered an injury that brought his truck driving career to an end. He then pursued an associate degree in computer science at Andover College. Following graduation, he took a position at Maine Savings Bank in Portland & then Unum, but his passion for truck driving never faded. Determined to return to the road, he completed rehabilitation and eventually went to work driving for Oakhurst, throughout New England. The final 13 years of his working career, John worked as a custodian at Windham Middle School, retiring in 2022, where he became a familiar and friendly presence to students, staff, and families alike. He especially cherished the opportunity to watch the middle school athletes compete, taking great pride and joy in their accomplishments.

Outside of work, John enjoyed a wide range of hobbies. He really enjoyed golfing, and was a member in the weekly Twilight League at Twin Falls Golf Course in Westbrook. John was a passionate New England sports fan who followed the Celtics, Red Sox, Sea Dogs, Patriots, Bruins and also NASCAR. He also dedicated significant time to managing numerous fantasy sports teams—often juggling 10–20 at once, sometimes having to use multiple computers during drafts. In addition, he enjoyed deer hunting and both open water and ice fishing.

John and his loving wife Darleen enjoyed spending time together over simple pleasures like going out for ice creams, out to eat (especially LongHorn Steakhouse), and John always looking for a place with a great prime rib. They also liked going to the movies, attending Maine Mariner & Sea Dog games in Portland, playing mini golf & candlepin bowling. A cherished memory was visiting Water Country with their grandson, Damian. Early in their relationship, they spent time together at Darleen’s family hunting camp in Lovell, Maine.

John is survived by his loving wife of over 39 years, Darleen Hawkes Doughty; stepson Matt Boullie; his siblings, Linda Mandarelli, Jim Doughty, Charles Doughty, Donald Doughty, and Cheryle Trufant. He was a loving Bumpa to Damian, Autumn, Makayla, Hailey, Isabelle and Hazel Boullie. He was predeceased by his parents, Kendrick and Frances Doughty, and his brothers, Kendrick Jr. and Scott Doughty. Also predeceased by his bonus parents Ma and Dad Cilley.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Dolby Blais Segee Funeral Home (35 Church Street, Westbrook, ME), with a funeral service to follow at noon.
