Obituary

Gorham- John Stephen Grovo Jr., 96, passed away with his family by his side on Friday, July 13, 2018, at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough. The son of John and Lucy (Chapman) Grovo he was born in Lewiston ME on December 12, 1921. When John was young his family moved to Westbrook where he was raised. After graduation from Westbrook High School, John started working at S.D. Warren. He joined the Army Air Corp during WWII. He served with the 515th "Fighter Group" under General Chennault. His unit took over from the "Flying Tigers" when they left China. After his discharge in 1946 he returned to work at the Mill where he worked his entire life. It was during this time that he met his first wife Roberta Lord, and they were married in 1947. They purchased a home on Saco St., and they settled in Westbrook to raise their family. Roberta passed away in 1972 and in 1974 John met and married Marian B. Thompson. John was a member of the Saccarappa Masonic Lodge of Free and Accepted Mason # 86, and a member of the Eastern Star. He enjoyed playing softball on the Mill's softball team. After John retired he volunteered extensively at the Hollis Elementary School, where he was known as "Uncle Johnny". He started at age 80 and volunteered until he was age 94. He was awarded the "6 Who Care" award and the Principal's Volunteer of the Year award for his many hours of service. He was predeceased by his wife Roberta in 1972 and by his wife Marian in 1997. He was also predeceased by his sister Priscilla Tanguay. He is survived by his children Cynthia J. Grovo, and her husband James Robinson of Gorham, Pamela J. Cullen, and her husband Richard of Dover N.H., Deborah A. Goss, and her husband Leland of Piedmont S. C., and Stephen S. Grovo of Windham. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rachel Goss Dawkins, Thomas Goss, John Cullen, and William Cullen, 6 great grandchildren, his brothers, Richard Grovo of Steep Falls, and George Grovo of Scarborough, and his sister Lucy Grovo of Brunswick. The family would like to thank Home Instead for all the wonderful caregivers and the Maine Veterans' Home staff for their loving care. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Tuesday, July 17, 2017 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Windham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee, 434 River Road. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 10:00 AM. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow the service in Riverside Cemetery in Raymond. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in John's memory to the Book Fairy Project at the Gorham Food Pantry, P.O. Box 54 Gorham, ME 04038.
