Obituary

John Andrew, aged 89, passed away due to medical complications on October 16th, 2024, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born on January 4, 1935, in Portland, Maine, to the late D. Kilton Andrew and Elizabeth Andrew. John attended Deering High School and graduated from the Governor's Academy, formerly known as Governor Dummer Academy in Massachusetts. During high school, he was active in football and a member of the Alpine Ski Club. Following high school, John pursued higher education at the University of New Hampshire and Portland Junior College, where he earned his associate degree. While attending UNH, John met his lifelong friend, Dave Sage. Together, they enjoyed over 40 years of fly fishing in Down East Maine. John often reminisced about his time serving in the United States Army in Germany, a period he spoke of fondly. While in Germany he continued his love for the outdoors and loved chasing after adventures while skiing the European Mountains. Outside of his military service, he had a passion for fly fishing, hiking, gardening, cross-country skiing, and biking on the Mountain Division Trail, where he was easily recognizable by his helmet adorned with devil horns. John was known for his friendly nature, always stopping to chat with anyone he encountered. A man of many talents, John was a beekeeper, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and affectionately known as "Uncle John" to his nieces and nephews. John's professional career spanned decades in the lumber and home-building supply industry. He worked for 23 years at L.C. Andrew and spent nine years with Hancock Lumber Company. After more than a decade working with the American Red Cross, he retired to focus on his many hobbies. John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Irene Andrew of Windham; his daughter, Beth Gallagher, and her husband, Kevin, of the San Fransico Bay Area, California; his son, "Andy"Andrew, and his wife, Jen, of the Northeast Kingdom, Vermont; his son, Bill Andrew, and his wife, Dr. Beata Wiktor, of Carrabassett Valley, Maine; his brother, Kilton, of Falmouth, Maine; and his sister, Martha, of Amelia Island, Florida. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate doctors and nurses at Maine Medical Center for the care and kindness John received. Visiting hours will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, October 27th, at Dolby Blais and Segee Funeral Home in Windham. A private graveside service will be held for the family at a later date.
