Westbrook, Jeanette Irene (Libby) Daly, 94, died Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at Earnest P. Barka Assisted Living in Brentwood, NH. She was born January 22, 1923 in Hiram, Maine to Philip Stanford Libby and Celia Alice (Lamont) Libby. The family soon moved to Cottage Place in Westbrook, where she grew up with her brother, Robert, and graduated from Westbrook High School. Jeanette married George "Ted" Edward Daly January 22, 1942. They had a daughter, Susan, and also a son, Robert, who died of medical complications a few days after birth. Jeanette managed the home front while Ted served in World War II. Ted entered the service in November 1943 and served until demobilization discharge in February 1946. Jeanette and Ted spent some time together while he trained in Florida. Assigned to Army engineering and construction, Ted sailed from San Francisco to New Guinea, then the Philippines, and with occupation forces in Japan. Jeanette kept an extensive scrapbook of Ted's service record, documenting his achievements, and experiences, and their expressions of love for each other. After working a short time in the paper sorting department at S. D. Warren, Jeanette served as deputy City Clerk and as acting City Clerk for Westbrook. Later, she was an assistant to Dr. J. Chase Rand, D.O. for thirteen years. Jeanette and her husband, George, served together as Pilgrim Fellowship leaders at Westbrook Congregational Church, where she also served on the Diaconal Board and was a member of the Ladies Guild. She is also a Past Worthy Advisor of Rainbow Girls. Other activities included Westbrook Woman's Club, Osteopathic Hospital of Maine Auxiliary, Brownie leader, Westbrook Fire Department Auxiliary, and Teacher in the Prides Corner Nursery School. In her spare time, Jeanette enjoyed working in her flower gardens, home decorating and especially hand crafts. Her greatest joy was family gatherings for any and all occasions. Jeanette was pre-deceased by a son, Robert, and by George, her husband of 60 years. She is survived by her brother, Robert Libby, a daughter, Susan and her husband, Edward Fernald of Hampton, New Hampshire, and by three grand-children and six great grand-children, Lisa Fernald Barker and Holden and Alec Barker of Aptos, California, Amy and her husband Paul Gies and Jake and Elizabeth Gies of Atlanta, Georgia, and Allison and her husband Peter Waterman and Libby and Cade Waterman of Amesbury, Massachusetts. Jeanette is also survived by a very special cousin, Joan and her husband, Don Labrecque of Westbrook. A visiting hour will be held from 1 to 2 PM Friday, July 7, followed by a funeral service at 2 PM at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
