GORHAM—Jane S. Evans, 82, a longtime resident of Gorham, died on April 5, 2017 at The Gorham House. Jane was born November 4, 1934 a daughter of George and Florence (Williams) Smearer. She grew up in Gorham, graduating from Gorham High School in the class of 1953. She continued her education at the Maine Medical School of Nursing where she became a registered nurse. One August 10, 1956, she married Dean W. Evans and together they raised their son Kyle at their home in Gorham. In addition to working at Maine Medical Center as a Nurse for 35 years, Jane was an outstanding wife, mother, and grandmother, a natural caregiver for all. Jane was an athletic woman whose second passion next to her family was golfing. Her competitive spirit led her to be an avid golfer and water-skier. She was a longtime member of many golf clubs including the Belgrade Lakes Golf Club, Naples Golf & Country Club, Gorham Country Club and Deer Track Golf Club in South Carolina. Involved in multiple golf organizations, Jane also organized a women's golf group in Myrtle Beach which remains active today. Dean and Jane enjoyed retirement together, spending 12 years wintering in South Carolina. She was a volunteer for many nursing homes even after retirement and played piano at the Little Falls Baptist Church. Some of her favorite pastimes include spending time with her sisters and summers at Sebago Lake. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Dean Evans of Gorham; son, Kyle Evans and his wife Marjorie of Belgrade Lakes; grandsons, Tyler Evans and his wife Kristen of Belgrade Lakes, and Rees Evans and his partner, Jennifer Reece of Coplin Plantation; sisters, Mary Brown and Sarah Rioux both of Gorham; and one great grandchild, Kyle Owen Evans of Belgrade Lakes. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff on the Oxford and Windsor II Units at the Gorham House, the hospice staff, Jen, Molly, and Angela; and Jane's two sisters, Mary and Sarah for their love and support throughout her journey with Alzheimer's. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 19 at 1pm at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham, ME 04038. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jane's name may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 383 US Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
