James Worthley obituary James "Jim" Morrison Worthley Junior died on May 13,2024 at the age of 92, surrounded by his family. Dad was born on October 10,1931 in Portland, Maine to James M. Worthley Sr. and Mildred (Sweatt) Worthley. He grew up in Portland, Maine where he attended local schools before graduating from Portland High School in 1949. After high school, dad served his country as a Private First Class in the Marine Corps, during the Korean War. We were extremely proud of his veteran status and you would often see dad around town in his Korean War veterans hat. On June 5, 1955 at Stevens Avenue Congregational Church in Portland, dad married the love of his life, Beverly Jean King. They made a home for themselves in Windham, Maine and there they would raise their three children: Susan, David, and Cheryl. Dad worked at the A&P Supermarkets for over 35 years and worked at the Windham Correctional Facility for over 20 years. Dad was very active in his community and coached many little league teams as well as becoming an umpire later on. He also was a member of the Masonic Hall in his earlier years. He loved his sports teams, Celtics, Red Socks and Patriots. He was a member of the Eagles, VFW and the Elks club. Dad was very active and enjoyed traveling on adventures with mom. He was an avid dancer, and he enjoyed cutting a rug with mom whenever he could. He bowled and golfed regularly and also played racket ball. He was a people person and loved being social. He loved getting into political debates with friends and family until mom would tell him to quit it. He always listened…eventually. In his last years, you could find him singing to his visitors and nurses at Gorham House. He was best known for singing, "You are my Sunshine." Dad is predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Beverly Jean Worthley, his half-sisters: Madeline Hazel Smith Buckley, Birdena Mildred Smith Murphy, and his siblings: Elaine Worthley Alley, Donna Worthley Provencher and William "Billy" Worthley. He is survived by his children: Susan Ann Curtis and her husband Dane of Gorham, David James Worthley and his wife Patty of Windham, and Cheryl Lee Nichols of Windham. Dad leaves behind his grandchildren: Derek (Erin) Curtis of Standish, Sean (Lorena) Curtis of Gorham, Brian (Katia) Worthley of Bath, Angela Worthley and Chad Legere of Windham, Matthew Nichols and Annita Douglas of Saco, and Patrick Nichols and James Wood of Rumford, Rhode Island. Dad was blessed with 12 great grandchildren as well as one on the way. He will forever be known as Great Papa to Jameson, Bentley, Jackson, Leah, Reese, Lincoln, Collin, Layne, Nora, Riff, Addy, Maisy and baby Desmond due to be born in September. He also leaves behind his very special friend and companion Gloria "Jeannie" Christie whom he enjoyed spending his time with over the last 10 years. She was there every weekend to support him at the Gorham House. She always put a smile on his face. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. We would also like to extend a big thank you for the wonderful care given by Gorham House and Compassus Hospice.
