James Milliken Sanderson November 3, 1936 - September 8, 2023 James (Jim) Milliken Sanderson, 86, died at his home in Gorham on September 8, 2023. Jim was born November 3, 1936, in Sanford, Maine to John Sanderson and Thelma Louise Bridges Sanderson of Newfield, Maine. He started school in Gorham, Maine but later moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he met his wife, Nancy Lorraine Bailey, while attending John Marshall High School in Richmond. They were married in 1957 and started a family in Chesterfield County, Virginia. While in Richmond he earned a degree in Electrical-Electronics Engineering from RPI. In 1970, Jim and Nancy moved their young family back to Jim's roots in Gorham, Maine, and purchased the old Knight's Hardware store in Westbrook on Main Street. They renamed the store Sportsman's Hardware and moved it to Central Street in Westbrook in 1977. The store was a staple of the community for decades until they sold the business in 1993. Jim filled his retirement with travel, family, friends, fishing and gardening. He was an outdoor enthusiast and loved only one thing more than time outdoors - his family. He was also a member of Temple Lodge 86 in Westbrook. Jim died peacefully at his home in Gorham while holding the hand of his wife of 66 years and supported by his family after fighting a long illness. Surviving in addition to his wife, Nancy (Bailey) Sanderson, are his son, Kenneth Sanderson and his wife, Traci Willis Sanderson, of Gorham; and daughter, Deborah Sanderson Spaide and her husband, Jim Spaide, of Naples, Florida; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Sanderson, Derek Sanderson, Michelle McKenna Spaide, Jennifer Spaide, Heather Spaide, Rebecca Spaide Ricotta, Chris Spaide, and eight great grandchildren. In lieu of memorial services, the family is asking for donations to be made in his honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
