Obituary

James R. McDonald James (Jim) R. McDonald passed peacefully at his home on April 11, 2018 at the age of 88 after struggling this winter with a brief illness. Jim was born on August 18, 1929 in Portland, Maine, son of the late John and Margaret McDonald. Jim graduated from South Portland High School in 1947, and with the class of 1951 from the University of Maine Orono, earning a B.S. in civil engineering. A graduate of the ROTC program at UMO (2nd lieutenant status), he went on to train at Ft. Belvoir, VA before deployment to Korea, where he served with the Army Corps of Engineers' 2nd Division. Notably, while in Korea he saw combat on Pork Chop Hill and Old Baldy. Discharged honorably from the U.S. Army in 1953, Jim returned stateside to work in Boston as a fire protection engineer before returning to reside full time in southern Maine. Early in his civil engineering career, Jim designed water and sewage systems throughout the state with the Gorham, ME civil engineering firm of Dale Caruthers, subsequently co-founding the engineering firm BH2M in Gorham. Also, a golf professional, he co-founded and designed Gorham Country Club (where he was head pro), and designed the second nine at the Purpoodock Country Club in Cape Elizabeth, ME. Jim is predeceased by his sisters Virginia Kandola and Margaret LaRose, and by his brothers John and Joseph McDonald. He is survived by his brother Frank McDonald of Scarborough, ME; sons Jim McDonald and his wife Laurie of South Deerfield, MA, Mike McDonald of Bridgton, Kevin McDonald and his wife Barbara of Scarborough, Stephen McDonald of Gorham, and daughter, Julie; six grandchildren, Amy Marr, Michael McDonald, Brian McDonald, Katelynn Spear, Brogan McDonald, and Colin McDonald; four great-grandchildren, Kelton, Olivia, Gabe and Matthew. Out of respect for Jim's wishes, a traditional service will not be held. However, a private celebration of Jim's life will be held in late spring. Those who wish may make donations online in Jim's name to the Maine Veteran's Administration or the Wounded Warrior Project.
