Obituary

James N. Hughes, 92, of Gorham passed away on May 6, 2021. Jim was born on July 24th, 1928, the son of James and Annie Hughes. Jim attended Portland Schools and on May 17, 1948 he joined the Marine Corp. He sailed around the world for maneuvers in Crete, Sicily, France, Malta, Gibraltar, Libya, Jamaica and then on to the interior of Korea where he spent 13 months. He was in Weapons Co. 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, known as Blitzen, Litzen and the Seventh Ridge Runners. He was honorably discharged as a Sgt. On May 16, 1952 and then spent three years in the Marine Reserves. He was a lifetime member of the Chosin Few and the Portland Veteran Firefighters. In 1952 Jim married Glenyce Brooks and they had four children together. Jim retired from the Portland Fire Department on February 16, 1977 after his career as a dispatcher. He was an avid sports fan, gardener, traveler and loved family gatherings. He was very proud of the service medals he received, which include, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation- 2 Silver Stars, Korean Presidential Citation, Good Conduct, Navy Commendations- 3 Bronze Stars, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal and U.N. Medal. Jim is survived by his wife Glenyce; four children; Barbara Hughes, of Gorham, Susan Hughes, and her husband Kevin of North Yarmouth, Grace Brady, and her husband Kevin of Saco, and Russell Hughes, and his wife Lisa of Gorham. He also leaves a sister, Marcia Fernald of Bladwin as well as five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. James will be interred with full military honors on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 2:00pm in the Southern Maine Memorial Veteran's Cemetery, 83 Stanley Rd, Springvale. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim's memory to the DAV Donation Center, P.O. Box 3151, Togus, ME 04330.
