Jack William Siulinski, 84, of Portland died peacefully in the early morning hours of January 27, 2013 at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough. Born in Portland, Me. on June 7, 1928, he was the son of Adam T. and Ouida Siulinski. Jack experienced an urban upbringing in Portland but also enjoyed many happy summers at Grand Lake in rural Jemseg, N.B., Canada. He was a 1946 graduate of Deering High School. Jack served in the Navy from 1946 to 1950. On vessels that carried him to assignments in the waters near Guam in the Pacific and the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, he earned the nickname, "Capt. Jack" which would become his namesake later in life. Soon after his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1950, he began studies at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and graduated with an Associate's degree in Imaging Science within the school of Graphic Arts and Photography. His career as a commercial photographer led him to interesting assignments including photographing the Prince of Fundy from an aircraft and serving on the press team at the State House in Augusta. Jack retired in 1990 after working as a cameraman for 27 years at WGME-TV, Guy Gannett Broadcasting Service. Jack was a true family man who was completely devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. He received much satisfaction from watching his grandchildren excel in sports and academics. He was not only the captain of his family; he was its heart and soul. Besides his devotion to family and photography, Jack loved the outdoors with his enjoyment of camping, skiing, boating, and later in life; he developed a passion for biking. He also loved animals, particularly dogs and birds. Qualities that permeated Jack's lifetime were his wittiness and his intense desire to connect to people in both work and personal life. He would have a humorous saying for almost everything that often transformed serious moments into lightheartedness. His unique sociability is truly part of Jack's legacy. Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pauline (Albert) Siulinski of Portland and 6 children: Claudia Gallant of Westbrook; Brian Siulinski of Pflugerville, TX; Bruce Siulinski of Brevard, NC.; Craig Siulinski of Auburn, MA; Paula Lowell of Atlanta, GA; and James Siulinski of Westbrook. He also is survived by a brother, Adam Siulinski, Jr., of South Portland, and 6 grandchildren: Jill Gallant-Shaw, Katie Siulinski Trojacek, Aaron Lowell, Alyssa Lowell, Jack Siulinski and Jim Siulinski.
