Immediately following high school, he joined the United States Navy, and proudly served his country during WWII. Upon his discharge, he came back to Maine and was married to Beverly Libby on November 22, 1947. He kept an immaculate home and had an "open-door policy" of which all were welcomed and offered a bowl of ice cream. His property was often a gathering place for family where he loved tossing a ball with his grandkids. Ira was a New England sports fan and in his younger years was a valued team member on all the local teams and even played semi-professional baseball after high school. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and playing on bowling leagues of which he won many trophies. Ira was often seen mowing the lawn on his beloved John Deere riding lawnmower or putting his woodworking skills to good use crafting Adirondack chairs and donkey carts.
