Windham- Howard John Stevens Parkhurst, 79, passed away peacefully at The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on April 24, 2017. Born in Portland and raised in Gorham, he was the youngest son of Frederick Charles and Cora (Stevens) Parkhurst. He graduated from Gorham High School in 1956. He moved to Windham with his family in 1967, and remained in the same home until his death. Howard was employed at L.C. Andrew Lumber Company for 4 1/2 years. He then was employed at S. D. Warren Paper Company on April 10, 1961 and retired from the company after 36 years on November 1, 1997. During his career there, he was elected Union President for 4 terms from 1984 to 1992 of the IBF Local 1030 Union. Howard was an avid baseball fan and a New York Yankees fan his whole life. He shared his love of this sport with his good friends Kicker and Cappy. In addition to baseball, he enjoyed taking care of his home, reading, collecting coins, playing cards and going to casinos. He also enjoyed celebrating birthdays and the holidays with his family. Howard was predeceased by his parents; his brother Donald T. Parkhurst and his wife Mary; his first-born son, Thomas Parkhurst; his ex-wife and mother of his children, Helen Dionne with whom he remained very close, until her death on June 7, 2016; and many dear friends. He is survived by his son, John Parkhurst and his wife Sherri, their sons Dalton and Nathan and their daughter Abbie; his daughter, Tracey Mowatt and her daughter Andrea; a nephew and two nieces. The family would like to especially thank 3 staff members at Springbrook Rehab in Westbrook: Carolyn, Jason and Christine. He was very fond of them and they took such great care of him. A special thank you to The Gosnell House staff - they were so good to him also during his short stay with them. Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation and sharing of memories, on Monday, May 1, 2017 from 4-7 p.m., at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham.
