GORHAM—Horace H. "Bud" Fogg Sr., 92, of Gorham, died peacefully surrounded by his family at the Gosnell Hospice House on December 29, 2016. He was born at home in Windham on May 29, 1924, the third-born child of Joseph and Zella Madeline (Willey) Fogg. Bud attended the Frederick Robie School through the 9th grade, and then worked for Ellis Paper Company and the South Portland Shipyard until being drafted into the US Army during WWII at the age of 18. He was with the 83rd Infantry Division, storming the beaches of Normandy on D-Day-minus 30. He became Staff Sergeant and led his men during the Battle of the Bulge where he suffered extreme frostbite to his feet. Bud received three Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, a Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal. He spent 20 months in stateside hospitals and endured 6 surgeries before his foot could heal. He was honorably discharged on March 15, 1946. He went on to work 38 years at SD Warren paper mill before retiring. Bud enjoyed competitive skiing at Winter Carnivals as a boy and, later, hunting, fishing, bowling and golfing. He loved dancing and watching the Red Sox. But mostly, he loved his family and friends. He was the consummate extrovert, quietly helping anyone in need and making everyone feel special and loved. He was compassionate, charming, outspoken, and funny. He was loyal to people and places, never tiring of yakking it up at Thayer's Store, the Legion, or the Eagles. He stayed active as a veteran, serving as post commander of the Smith-Wagner Post 60 in Gorham and maintaining membership at American Legion Post 197 in Westbrook, VFW Post 832 in South Portland, Disabled American Veterans Post in Portland, and life membership at Amvets Post 33 in Jay. He was also a member of the Westbrook Eagles. Bud is survived by his loving children, Harvey Fogg and wife Delores, daughter in law Vicki Fogg, Mary Fogg and partner Jean Gordon, Gail LeBlanc and husband Edward, and John "Jack" Fogg all of Gorham. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Rogers, 13 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and an ever growing number of great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; his ex-wife and best friend, Marie Fogg; a dear friend, Diane Palozza; his beloved son, Horace Fogg Jr.; his grandson, Harvey Fogg Jr; and siblings, Harold Fogg, John Fogg, Kenneth Fogg, and Pauline Wyman. Bud's family would like to extend deep appreciation and gratitude to his extended families – Thayer's store, Evergreen Credit Union, the American Legion, and the Westbrook Eagles – for the friendships, love, joy, and respect they showered on him. Thanks too to the staff of Gosnell House for providing Dad, family, and friends a safe and sacred holding space to support his transition. A memorial and celebration of Bud's life will be held on Sunday, January 8th from 1-4pm at the American Legion Post 197, 300 Conant Street, Westbrook, ME 04092. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bud's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
