Obituary

Herbert Hansen October 19, 1929 - February 12, 2023 Herbert Hansen, 93, of Windham, Maine died February 12th at Ledgewood Manor after a long illness. He was born in Grimstad, Norway on October 19th, 1929. The son of Hans Christien Hansen and Julie Holst Hansen. Herb was just as proud of his Norwegian heritage as he was of being an American citizen. He became a United States citizen at six months of age when his family returned from their visit to Norway back to their home in Brooklyn, New York. Herb was educated in New York City public schools and was a graduate of the Manhattan School of Aviation. At age 17, Herb volunteered to join the U.S. Army. He served with valor during the Korean Conflict and was promoted and awarded decorations for bravery. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, Herb moved to Maine where he became a well known figure on the Portland waterfront. He worked for several marine related entities, most notably Golten Ship Repair, from which he retired as general manager after thirty-two years. Herb was predeceased by his parents, his identical twin brother Harold, and his sister Laura. Herb is survived by his wife Barbara, his sons Michael and Mark, Mark's wife Michaela, two grandsons, and one great grandchild. A private celebration of Herb's long life is being planned by his family.
