WINDHAM - Henry Clay Oatley, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 7, 2017 at the Barron Center Nursing Home. He was 87 years old - born December 5, 1929 in Westerly, RI to Doris (Hartridge) and Henry C. Oatley Sr. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Oatley of Windham, ME; brother Robert Oatley of Florida; children Nina (Oatley) Andersen of Portland, ME, Diane Oatley of Oslo, Norway, and Thomas Oatley of Durham, NC; grandsons Peter and Adam Anderson of Alaska; and great-grandchildren Aluhk, Nipayapon and Trevin Anderson, also of Alaska. He attended public school in Brooklyn, NY and then Columbia University where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering. He worked as a civil engineer for several different companies, and then on his own the last 10 years of his career, retiring at age 75. Henry loved playing his saxophone and was active for over 30 years in several local groups; the Casco Bay Concert Band, Maine Pops Concert Band and the Sixty Plus Swing Band. Jazz was his first love and he enjoyed listening to Paul Desmond and Stan Getz. Second to his love for music was his love for the Boston Red Sox – he was a faithful fan throughout their many ups and downs. Other interests included bird watching, politics, history, family genealogy and reading. Anyone who knew Henry appreciated his wry sense of humor, kindness, quick mind and intellect. He became a favorite among the staff at the Barron Center Nursing Home where he spent the last 10 months of his life. He will be remembered with love and fondness by his family, friends and the many musicians in the local music groups he played in. A special thank you goes out to the wonderful staff at the Barron Center Nursing Home for taking such good and loving care of him this past year. A remembrance gathering will be held later this month at the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church in Portland, the date of the gathering will be announced at a later time.
