Gorham- Helen June Young, 94, of Gorham, passed away in Scarborough on April 11, 2017. She was born in Lenora, Kansas, on July 22, 1922, the daughter of Clyde and Gladys Mendel. As a young woman, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Lenora, Kansas, and later taught 3rd grade in Hill City, Kansas. She changed careers and worked as a stewardess for T.W.A. where she met her future husband, James R. Young, who was a flight engineer for the same airline. The two were eventually married and settled in Long Island, New York, where they lived 30 years and raised their only child. Later they moved to Gorham where they lived happily for 22 years. Helen volunteered at Brighton Medical Center and delivered meals through Meals on Wheels. She attended First Baptist Church in Portland. Helen was an extremely appreciative woman who was very thoughtful, and content with the love of family and simple pleasures. She was predeceased by her husband James in 2008, her brother Forest Mendel, and her sister Carol Stevens. She is survived by her daughter Janet Rodgers and husband Dale of Gorham and her three grandsons, Matthew, David, and Daniel. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial graveside service on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St. Portland.
